Up and Coming: Colossio – Krautiger Electronic aus Mexiko

Psychedelic Rock, elektronische Klänge und eine Prise Düsternis, das alles zusammen ergibt Colossio. Der Mexikaner Fernando Luna veröffentlichte im Juni mit "Moto" eine EP, die für viel Aufsehen und redaktionsintern für einen kleinen Hype sorgte. Er zeigt damit die gesamte Bandbreite seines Sounds: Mit schweren Gitarren, verstörenden Elementen und langsamen hypnotischen Beats positioniert sich Colossio irgendwo zwischen Red Axes und Nicolas Jaar, fügt dem ganzen aber seine völlig eigene Note hinzu. Wir trafen den Mann aus Monterrey zum Interview in unserem neuen Up & Coming.

Du hast einen sehr eigenständigen Stil entwickelt, der sich stark an Rock und Psychedelic Sounds orientiert. Was waren und sind die größten Einflüsse für deine Musik?

Das reicht von Jim Morrison und The Doors bis hin zu New Order, von mexikanischen Künstlern wie Jose Jose oder hin zu Krautrock mit Can und anderen Bands.

Mexikanische Musik ist in Europa eher unbekannt und wird oft mit dem Stereotyp der Mariachi-Bands dargestellt. Welche Künstler kannst du empfehlen, um einen anderen Blickwinkel auf die Musik Mexikos zu geben?

Bei mir ist es größtenteils Rockmusik, die ich höre. Wenn ich zum Beispiel mit dem Auto fahre, höre ich gerne Villa Lobos, eine Band, in der ich selbst Bass spiele, hahaha. Ansonsten kann ich noch Bands wie Sol Oosel, Clubz und Yesco empfehlen.

Letzten Monat hast du deine "Moto EP" mitsamt eines Videos für den Track "Ansia" veröffentlicht. Welche Releases sind denn in Zukunft bei dir geplant?

Momentan arbeite ich an vielen verschiedenen Tracks. Es sind einige Remixe für Labels wie Duro und Blindetonation und eine neue EP für das spanische Label Melomana Records geplant. Ich konzentriere mich momentan sehr darauf, Musik für den Dancefloor zu machen.

Hast du spezielles Equipment, mit dem du produzierst und wie sieht dein Workflow für gewöhnlich aus?

Ich habe von Moog einen Mother-32 und einen Werkstatt-01. Dann benutze ich noch einen MicroKORG, einen Ensoniq SQ-80 und einige Effektpedale. Ich habe normalerweise alles angeschlossen und beginne dann mit einer Drum- und Percussion-Grundlage, bevor ich den Bass mit der Bassgitarre einspiele. Wenn das Gerüst dann steht, nehme ich endlos lang Synthesizer und Noises auf. Zum Schluss höre ich mir das ganze wieder an und lösche das, was ich nicht mag. Das mache ich dann für Stunden, Tage und Monate... haha.

Du hast bisher nicht außerhalb von Mexiko gespielt. Hast du schon Pläne, in anderen Ländern und speziell in Europa zu spielen?

Ich würde sehr gerne mal nach Europa kommen und dort spielen und die Möglichkeit ist auch da. Bisher ist das alles aber noch nicht sehr konkret.

Zum Abschluss: Wie würdest du ein perfektes DJ-Set beschreiben?

Ich persönlich verfolge da etwas Mystisches. Eine Reise in die Dunkelheit, in der die Menschen eintauchen können.

Psychedelic Rock, electronic sounds and a pinch of darkness. All wrapped together and you get Colossio. With his 'Moto' EP, released last month, the Mexican artist Fernando Luna aka Colossio established the unique and rich spectrum of his music. Heavy guitars, disturbing elements and slow, hypnotic beats recall the sound of artists like Red Axes or Nicolas Jaar but with a rare and independent touch. We present to you the man from Monterrey in our new Up & Coming.

You developed a pretty unique style with a lot of rock and psychedelic sounds. What are the major influences for your music?

From Jim Morrison and The Doors to New Order. Mexican artists like Jose Jose or german Krautrock with Can and others.

In Europe, Mexican music is rather unknown and mostly stereotyped by mariachi bands. What artists and genres would you recommend in order to give a new perspective on Mexican music?

When I drive around in the car I like to listen Villa Lobos a band where I play the bass, hahaha. Other Mexican Bands I recommend are Sol Oosel, Clubz or Yesco. It is mostly Rock music and its variants.

Last month you released your „Moto EP“ and a video for your track 'Ansia'. Are there more special releases planned for the future and do you want to incorporate different genres or influences into your sound?

I'm working on a lot of different tracks. There are several remixes that I have been working on for labels such as Duro, Blindetonation and a new EP for the Spanish label Melomana Records. Right now I will continue working on music for the dancefloor.

Do you have any specific gear that you use and how would you describe your producing process?

The gear that I have is a Mother-32 and Werkstatt-01 from Moog, a MicroKORG, a Ensoniq SQ80 and some pedals. I have everything set up and usually begin with a battery/drum base, percussions and then I start playing the bass guitar. When I like something I record it and start playing and recording Synthesizers and noises,  about it until I get tired. I finally hear it and erase what I do not like, thus for hours, days, months... haha.

So far you have not been outside of Mexico with your music. Are there any plans to travel to different countries and especially to Europe?

I would like to come to Europe the next year, I am seeing the possibility of doing it, but still nothing concrete.

How would you describe a perfect DJ Set?

Personally, I seek to follow a mysticism, a dark journey that people can reach.
