Manchmal sind es die einfachsten Ideen, bei denen man sich an den Kopf greift und denkt:"Da hätte man aber auch von selbst drauf kommen können". AKAI machts hier mal wieder allen anderen vor und kommt mit einem Pad-Controller um die Ecke, der die Sounds von einer SD-Karte abfeuert. Über einen kleinen Screen und einer Navigation lassen sich so einfach die Samples auf die Pads legen und man kann unabhängig von einem Computer Sampletriggering betreiben. Ein mitgelieferter Sample-Editor soll das bespielen der SD-Karte auf Mac und PC einfacher gestalten und wer sich noch keine SD-Karte besorgt hat, kann angeblich schon mit ein paar Onboardsounds rumspielen oder den MPX8 auch als USB-MIDI-Controller nutzen.Falls gewollt, kann der Sound über ein symmetrisches Klinken-Paar oder einem Mini-Stereo-Klinkenanschluss ausgegeben werden. Der ausgestellte Prototyp auf der NAMM war, auch wenn aus Kunststoff, doch recht massiv verarbeitet und lies sich keinen Millimeter verwinden. Bei manch anderen Pad-Controllern in der Nano-Klasse sieht das schon anders aus.

Das Prinzip eines Stand-Alone Controllers mit SD-Karte und Velocity Pads ist vielleicht nicht von Einzigartigkeit geprägt, betrachtet man aber den Kampfpreis von 99.- US Dollar, dann wird man wohl schon etwas länger suchen müssen, um ein adäquates Preis-Leistungsverhältnis zu finden. Die Lieferzeit wurde mit Mai 2013 angesetzt. Was der MPX8 Controller letztendlich in Europa kosten wird, ist noch nicht ganz sicher.

AKAI once again stays two steps ahead of the game with their new pad-controller, that fires samples from a SD card. Using the small display & navigation element, it's possible to assign the samples to the pads & can trigger samples without being connected to a computer. It comes with sample editing software that helps to transfer your samples easily from Mac or PC & for those of you that don't have a SD card, it's possible play some of the onboardsounds or use it as a USB midi controller. If necessary, the sound can be played using a pair of symmetrical jacks or a mini stereo jack. The prototype on show at the NAMM, even if made out of plastic, appeared very solid & couldn't be be twisted, somthing that can't be said of other nano controllers.

The idea of a stand-alone controller with a SD card & velocity pads may not be very original, but considering the small price-tag of 99 US Dollars, then you'll have to look for a long time to find an alternative offering such value for money. The release date is set for May 2013. How much the MPX8 controller is going to cost in europe has yet to be set.
