Der CDJ-2000 nexus ist das aktuelle Mediaplayer Profimodell von Pioneer. Wir haben es für euch ausführlich unter die Lupe genommen.

Das Auflegen mit CDs war über viele Jahre eine Disziplin, die vor allen Dingen von „Nicht-Club-DJs“ ausgeübt wurde. Einer der Gründe dafür war der Mangel an entsprechend geeigneter Hardware. Die bis dato angebotenen Doppel-CD-Player waren in der Regel nur Notfalllösungen. Mit der Einführung der CDJ-1000 CD-Player von Pioneer änderte sich dieses und der Siegeszug der CD in den DJ-Kanzeln nahm seinen Lauf. Für die aktuellen CDJ-Modelle spielen CDs nur noch eine untergeordnete Rolle, da die Entwicklung im Bereich digitaler Datenträger immer weiter fortschreitet. Mit welchen Medientypen der CDJ-2000 nexus umgehen kann und wie er darüber hinaus ausgestattet ist, erfahrt ihr in diesem Test.

Ausstattung

Die Gehäuseabmessungen des CDJ-2000 nexus wurden so gewählt, dass dieser sich perfekt mit einem DJM-900 nexus (Testbericht) Mixer kombinieren lässt. Direkt nach dem Auspacken fällt das 6,1 Zoll große und leicht angewinkelte Farbdisplay ins Auge und das in seinem Drehwiderstand anpassbare Jog-Rad. Auf der linken Seite des Players befinden sich die Transport- und Navigationstasten sowie Hot-Cue-Bedienelemente und die SD- und USB-Medienanschlüsse. Auf der rechten Seite gibt es einen Pitchfader mit Temporesettaste und einer optional aktivierbaren Tonhöhenkorrektur. Direkt darüber platziert wurde die neue Synchronisationsfunktion, die in einem Netzwerk mit weiteren CDJ-2000 nexus nutzbar ist. Zum Ausstattungsumfang gehören außerdem ein CDJ-/Vinyl-Wahlmodus und  eine stufenlos einstellbare Start- und Stoppzeit, um das Verhalten eines Plattenspielers zu simulieren. Oberhalb des Jog-Rads gibt es eine Aktivierung für den neuen Slip-Modus. Dieser sorgt beim Auslösen von Loops, Cue-Punkten und Scratch-Manövern für eine kontinuierliche Wiedergabe.

Zur Aktivierung und Speicherung von Loops und Cue-Punkten befinden sich weitere Bedienelemente unterhalb des Displays. Auf der linken Seite der Display-Einheit befindet sich die Einschaltoption für die ebenfalls neue Quantize-Funktion. Diese Funktion unterstützt die treffsichere Aktivierung von Loops und Cue-Punkten. Des Weiteren gibt es vertikal angeordnete Tasten, die eine Songauswahl aus unterschiedlichen Medientypen und Quellen erlauben. Den Abschluss bildet eine Tastenreihe und ein Drehregler oberhalb und seitlich des Displays, die zum Navigieren in Songspeichern, Anlegen und Aufrufen von Tag-Listen und Einstellen des Players dienen.

Anschlüsse

Das Ausgangssignal sendet der CDJ-2000 nexus über seine rückwärtig verbauten Cinch-Buchsen in analoger oder digitaler Form an ein Mischpult. Für eine Relais-Wiedergabe, die ein abwechselndes, automatisches Spielen von Songs mit zwei Playern erlaubt, ist eine Control-Buchse vorhanden. Eine Netzwerkbuchse ermöglicht die Integration des Players in ein Pro-DJ-Link-Netzwerk. Zur Nutzung der Zweikanal-Soundkarten- und MIDI-Controller-Funktion ist der CDJ-2000 nexus mit einem USB-Anschluss ausgestattet.

Songspeicher

Der CDJ-2000 nexus lässt sich auf unterschiedliche Weise mit Songs füttern. Das Slot-in-Laufwerk auf der Vorderseite kann mit Audio- und Daten-CDs oder Daten-DVDs bestückt werden. Auf der Oberseite gibt es einen Slot zur Nutzung von SD- und SDHC-Karten und eine USB-Buchse für USB-Sticks oder Festplatten. SD-Karten und USB-Medien lassen sich in einem Pro-DJ-Link-Geräteverbund auch von mehreren CDJ-Playern gemeinsam nutzen. Als Besonderheit können auch iOS- und Android-Geräte als Songspeicher eingebunden werden.

Rekordbox

Zur Aufbereitung und Organisation von Songs legt Pioneer den CDJ-2000-nexus-Geräten die unter Mac- und Windows ausführbare Software Rekordbox [1] bei. Mit dieser Software lässt sich die Geschwindigkeit und Tonhöhe von Songs ermitteln und die Wellenformdarstellung erzeugen. Das bei der Tempoanalyse generierte Taktgitter lässt sich bei Bedarf manuell bearbeiten, sodass die Quantize- und Sync-Funktion der Player anschließend fehlerfrei genutzt werden kann. Zudem können Songs mit Cue-Punkten, Memory Points und (Active) Loops versehen und zur besseren Übersicht in Playlisten einsortiert werden.

Nach der Analyse und Sortierung der Songs können diese entweder auf ein USB-/SD-Medium oder ein mobiles iOS-/Android-Geräte kopiert und anschließend an den Player angeschlossen werden. Beim Einsatz von iOS-/Android-Geräten muss auf diesen die kostenlose App Rekordbox installiert sein, damit der Player das Gerät als Songlieferant akzeptiert. Alternativ kann die Songvorbereitung auch ausschließlich mit der App auf iOS-/Android-Geräten erfolgen.

Pro-DJ-Link-Netzwerk

In einem Pioneer Pro-DJ-Link-Netzwerk können bis zu vier kompatible CDJ-Player, DJ-Mixer, Computer und mobile iOS-/Android-Geräte miteinander kommunizieren. Zur Organisation der Datenströme werden Netzwerkverbindungen genutzt und ein zusätzlicher Netzwerkrouter benötigt. Die Verkabelung der Player, Mixer und Computer erfolgt per CAT5e-Kabel (oder besser) an den Router. Wenn die Einbindung der iOS-/Android-Geräte und Computer drahtlos erfolgen soll, benötigt der Router eine entsprechende WLAN-Schnittstelle oder es muss ein zusätzlicher Access Point zum Einsatz kommen. Die Einrichtung des Netzwerks gelingt am einfachsten, wenn der Router die Netzwerkadressen für jedes Gerät per DHCP selbst vergibt. Ein Pro-DJ-Link-Netzwerk kann auf verschiedene Arten genutzt werden. Eine Option ist die ausschließliche Verbindung von CDJ-Playern und einem Mixer mit einem Router. In dieser Konstellation können alle CDJ-Player auf einen gemeinsamen USB-/SD-Datenträger zugreifen, der an einen Player angeschlossen wurde.

Befindet sich die App Rekordbox auf einem der iOS-/Android-Geräte, gelingt dieses Vorgehen auch für diese Gerätegattung bei einem direkten Anschluss mit einem USB-Kabel. Eine alternative Möglichkeit der Netzwerknutzung ist der zusätzliche Anschluss von maximal zwei Computern (per Kabel oder drahtlos), auf denen die Software Rekordbox ausgeführt wird. Die Computer können als Songspeicher zum Einsatz kommen und dienen gleichzeitig der Überwachung des Systems. Zudem können Songs mit der Maus direkt vom Computer aus in die Player geladen werden. Der Mixer wird in allen genannten Varianten mit Songgeschwindigkeitsdaten versorgt, um Effekte zu synchronisieren, und sendet Faderstatusmeldungen an die Player. Per Farbumschaltung der Jog-Räder wird visualisiert, welcher Player im Ausgangssignal des Mixers zu hören ist.

Digital-DJing

Der CDJ-2000 nexus kann neben der Wiedergabe von digitalen Musikstücken auch als Soundkarte und Controller für DJ-Softwareprogramme eingesetzt werden. Am komfortabelsten funktioniert dieses in Verbindung mit digitalen DJ-Systemen, die eine HID-Unterstützung bieten. Aktuell funktioniert dieses nur mit Traktor Pro (ab Version 2.6), da die Umsetzung für Serato Scratch Live noch aussteht. Verbindet man einen oder mehrere Pioneer-Player per USB-Kabel mit einem Traktor-System, lässt dieses sich ohne den Einsatz von Timecode-Medien steuern. Die (advanced) HID-Unterstützung ermöglicht eine sehr direkte Kontrolle mit extrem niedrigen Latenzzeiten und erlaubt einen gegenseitigen Datenaustausch. Mit dem CDJ-2000 nexus kann in Playlisten navigiert und können Songs in die Decks geladen werden. Das Display des Players zeigt die Playlisten inklusive der Albumcover und blendet nach dem Laden eines Songs dessen Wellenform ein.

Der CDJ-2000 nexus kann in dem beschriebenen Szenario auch als Soundkarte eingesetzt werden. Dieses funktioniert unter Windows durch die alleinige Treiberinstallation auch für zwei CDJ-Player. Sollen mehrere CDJ in Kombination mit einem Mac-Computer genutzt werden, so empfiehlt sich der Einsatz der kostenlosen Software „Aggregator“, die Pioneer als Download anbietet [2|. Mit dieser lassen sich problemlos mehrere Player zusammenfassen und als ein Gerät in Traktor auswählen.

Praxis

DJs, die zuvor bereits Erfahrungen mit dem CDJ-2000 oder einem der kleineren Modelle wie dem CDJ-900 gesammelt haben, werden keine großen Hürden haben, den CDJ-2000 nexus in Betrieb zu nehmen. Die Wiedergabe von Songs, die per CD oder anderen Datenträgern zugeführt werden, erfolgt durch wenige Bedienschritte, die zumeist selbst erklärend sind. Empfehlenswert ist die bevorzugte Nutzung von SD-Karten oder USB-Medien nach einer  vorigen Aufbereitung der Songs durch die Software Rekordbox. Nur in dieser Kombination kann die detaillierte Wellenformansicht und die Quantisierungsfunktion genutzt werden. Gleiches gilt für das Anlegen von Tag-Listen - eine praktische Vorsortiermöglichkeit – und den Einsatz der Sync-Funktion. Bei der Songanalyse und dem Setzen von Beatgrids mit Rekordbox sollte man den korrekten Sitz dieses Gitters sehr genau überprüfen. Leider musste ich während meines Tests bei der Verwendung von Rekordbox 2.0.1 sehr viele Songs nachbearbeiten, was bei einem großen Songbestand ein sehr zeitraubender Prozess ist.

Glücklicherweise bietet der CDJ-2000 nexus die Möglichkeit das Beatgrid nach dem Laden eines Songs im Display des Players zu bearbeiten und so eventuelle Ungenauigkeiten auszubügeln. Sitzt das Gitter perfekt, kann man von vielen automatischen Hilfen bedenkenlos Gebrauch machen. Die Sync-Funktion gleicht das Tempo von Songs an und sorgt dafür, dass diese nicht auseinanderlaufen. Bei der Analyse der Songs mit Rekordbox sollte man neben der Geschwindigkeit auch die Tonhöhe der Musikstücke ermitteln lassen, um einen harmonischen Mix anfertigen zu können. Ändert man zusätzlich die Darstellungsoptionen des CDJ-2000 nexus, zeigt dieser tonal passende Songs in der Auswahl

durch eine farbliche Kenntlichmachung an. Diese Mixoption funktioniert nur dann zuverlässig, wenn parallel dazu die Tonhöhenkorrektur zum Einsatz kommt. Hier hat Pioneer ganze Arbeit geleistet, denn die Tonhöhenkorrektur funktioniert selbst bei großen Tempoänderungen außerordentlich gut. Das Anlegen von Memory Points zur Markierung von Mixstellen oder das Speichern von Active Loops kann in der Software/App Rekordbox oder mit dem Player erfolgen. Im Display des CDJ-2000 nexus werden diese Songstellen angezeigt und die Takt- (Beat-) Anzeige unterstützt diesen Prozess durch einen Counter. Die Slip-Funktion bietet eine große kreative Spielwiese, da sie synchron laufende Songs beim Einsatz von Cue-Punkten, Loops und Scratch-Manövern nicht aus dem Gleichklang bringt.

Überzeugt hat mich bei diesem Test die einfach einzurichtende HID-Steuerung von Traktor Pro, die mit wenigen Mausklicks gestartet werden kann. Klanglich hat mir der der CDJ-2000 nexus sehr gut gefallen und auch die Verarbeitung des Gehäuses ist ordentlich. Die Haptik des komplett aus Plastik gefertigten Geräts ist allerdings nicht sonderlich ansprechend und die Kanten sind nicht entgratet. Hier hätte man bei einem Budget von 1900 Euro sicherlich etwas Hochwertiges erwarten können.

Fazit

Mit dem aktuellen Modell CDJ-2000 nexus legt Branchenprimus Pioneer die Messlatte für professionelle Mediaplayer noch ein Stückchen höher. Der Player kann mit vielen unterschiedlichen Medientypen umgehen und bietet neben kreativen Einsatzmöglichkeiten auch viele Komfortfunktionen, welche die Mixarbeit erleichtern. Schade nur, dass viele dieser Funktionen ausschließlich für SD/-USB-Medien zur Verfügung stehen, die zudem mit speziell aufbereiteten Songdaten bestückt sein müssen. DJs, die den CDJ-2000 nexus spontan oder mit Audio-CDs nutzen, müssen sich mit einem deutlich abgespeckten Funktionsumfang zufrieden geben. Anwender, die bereits einen CDJ-2000 ihr Eigen nennen, sollten abwägen, ob sich ein Upgrade lohnt, da einige der neuen Funktionen [3] dem Vorgängermodell per Firmwareaktualisierung mit auf den Weg gegeben werden. Wer sich allerdings auf die Vorbereitungsarbeit einlässt und/oder den CDJ-2000 nexus in einem Pro-DJ-Link-Netzwerk mit mehreren Geräten kombiniert, erhält ein sehr gut funktionierendes, professionelles DJ-System.

The CDJ-2000 nexus is the current professional mediaplayer brought to you by Pioneer. We've taken a closer look at all the features for you.

For years, mixing with CD's was a discipline practiced mostly by bedroom DJ's due to the lack of sufficient and/or decent hardware available. The dual CD players on offer up until a couple of years ago tended to be there solely for emergency situations. With the introduction of the Pioneer CDJ-1000 player, CD's launched into popularity and established their place in DJ booths worldwide. In the past few years the CD has started to play a much smaller role in current CDJ models, as the development in digital DJ'ing advances at a tremendous pace. You can find out which media types the CDJ-nexus accepts as well as a full review of it's features here in this test.

Features:

The dimensions of the CDJ-2000 nexus have been specifically chosen so as to fit perfectly alongside their DJM-900 nexus mixer. As soon as they have been unboxed the first things that you notice are the large 6,1 inch slanted colour-display and the jogwheel with adjustable torque. On the left hand side of the player are the transport and navigation controls accompanied by the hot-cue buttons, SD and USB slots. On the right hand side there is the pitchfader featuring a reset button and  a optional master tempo button. Directly above them you will find the new sync function that can be used in conjunction with other CDJ-200 nexus' connected via lan cable. The user can also choose between  CDJ and vinyl mode, for whatever style of mixing is preferred. The fully adjustable start/stop times give a hint of vinyl feeling. Above the jogwheel is the new slip mode button that preserves continuity whilst using features such as loops, cue points and scratches. Set under the display are the the control elements for the saving/activating of loops and cue-points. On the left next to the display is the new quantize function button that guarantees loops and cues to sit perfectly in the mix upon activation. Above the quantize button are the buttons that allow the selection of songs from various media types and sources. Last but not least, there are the navigation keys & rotary control above the display for simplified browsing & set-up functions of the player.

Connections:

The analog or digital output signal is sent via the RCA jacks at the back. To connect two players for the relay funtion, there is a control socket, that when set-up allows you to alternately & automatically play songs. There is a socket for a network cable that turns them into a Pro-DJ-Link network. To use the two channel soundcard as well as the MIDI control function the CDJ-2000 nexus has a usb port.

Song Memory.

There are various possibillities to feed the CDJ-2000 nexus with tunes. The CD slot at the front can play audio and data CD's or data DVD's. On the top there is a slot for SD/SDHC cards and a USB slot too. SD cards & USB devices can also be used in Pro-DJ-Link mode by more than one player. As a highlight, iOS & Android devices can be connected & their song memory used too.

Rekordbox.

For the preparation & organisation of tracks, Pioneer includes the Rekordbox software for Mac & Windows. Rekordbox allows the user to determine the  BPM & pitch of a track as well as creating it's waveform. The beatgrid created during BPM analysis can be altered manually, so that the quantize & sync-functions properly within the player. It is also possible to create cue-points, memory points and (active) loops too that can be intergrated into playlists for a better overview whilst mixing.

Once tracks have been analysed & sorted, they can be stored onto a USB/SD or iOs/Android device & then connected to the player. To use an iOS/Android device, the free Rekordbox App has to be installed for the player to read & accept the track details. Alternatively, the tracks can be scanned & organised just using the app.

Pro-DJ-Link network

In a Pioneer Pro-DJ-Link network it is possible to connect up to 4 compatible CDJ players, DJ mixers, computers & mobile iOS/Android devices that can then communicate with each other. The data streams are organised using network connections & a network router. The cabling of the player, mixer & computer is done using CAT5e cables (or better) connected to the router. If an iOS/Android device should be connected wirelessly, then the router needs a WIFI interface or an extra Access Point has to be created. The simplest way to install the network , is when the router automatically assigns network addresses for each device over DHCP. A Pro-DJ-Link can be used in many different ways. One option is to only connect CDJ's & a mixer via a router. In this constellation all CDJ players can access one USB/SD device connected to one player. If using an iOS/Android device with the Rekordbox App already installed, just connect it via USB cable to achieve the same result. An alternative use of the network is to connect a maximum of two computers (via cable or WIFI) that are both running the Rekordbox software. The computers can be used as a song library & simultaneously used to monitor the whole set-up. Songs can be loaded directly into a player via drag & drop. The mixer is fed all known variants of the song tempo data to syncronize the effects, as well as sending the fader's status directly to the player. The jogwheel's colour changes to visualize exactly which output-signal is being played through the mixer.

Digital Djing

The CDJ-2000 nexus isn't just good for the playback of digital tracks but can also be used as a soundcard & controller for various DJ software. The easiest set-up is with Dj software that has HID support. At the moment it only possible with Traktor Pro (version 2.6 & higher), as the development for Serato Scratch live is still in the making. If one or more Pioneer players are connected via USB cable to a Traktor system, it can be controlled without needing timecode cd's. The (advanced) HID support allows fast, direct control with extremely low latencies coupled with data communication between player & computer. The CDJ-2000 nexus can navigate the playlists & load tracks into decks. The display shows the playlists & album covers as well as the waveform of the loaded song. The CDJ-2000 nexus can be used as the soundcard too in this scenario, in Windows it is necessary to download & install the driver for it to work. If Mac users wish to use this function, then it is recommended that they download the Aggregator freeware, from the Pioneer site. This combines all players together & let's them be chosen as one device in the Traktor options menu.

In practice.

DJ's that have already had experience with the CDJ-2000 or the slightly smaller CDJ- 900 won't have too many problems getting to grips with the CDJ-2000 nexus. The playback of songs, whether from CD or other devices, is a quick & easy process, simplified by an almost self explanatory menu. It is recommended to use the preferred USB/SD form of media input, after it has been scanned by the Rekordbox software. Only in this combination is it possible to take advantage of the detailed waveform display & quantize functions. The same goes for compiling tag-lists  a practical way of sorting tracks in advance - & using the sync function. After songs have been analysed in Rekordbox, it is important to check the beat grids in detail to see if they sit on the beat perfectly. Unfortunately, during our tests using Rekordbox 2.0.1 we had to adjust a large number of songs, which can be a pain if you have a large music library. On the bright side, the CDJ-2000 nexus offers it's users the chance to adjust the beat-grid after a song has been loaded manually using the display & so avoid eventual mishaps whilst mixing. Once the beat-grid has been set properly, you are able to use all the automatic aids without a worry. The sync function adjusts the songs to the right tempo & makes sure the songs stay don't drift apart. Whilst analysing the songs with Rekordbox it is important scan them not only for their BPM, but also their pitch, so as to mix in key. You can change the display options on the CDJ-2000 nexus to show the tonally matching songs using colour identification. This style of mixing is only reliable when using the pitch correction function. Pioneer has done an amazing job in this respect, as the pitch correction even works really well with big differences in speed. Creating memory points or saving active loops can either be done in the Rekordbox software/App or directly on the player. These are shown in the display of the CDJ-2000 nexus & these functions are supported by a counter. The Slip mode has a lot to offer, it silently continues song playback whilst looping or scratching and then continues playback at the exact time the maneuver ends. I was really impressed during this test with the easy set-up of the HID control for Traktor Pro, that is ready to use within a few mouse clicks. Soundwise, the CDJ-2000 nexus is excellent & the housing is well-built. The overall feel of the plastic finished is a lot to be desired & they could have taken the time to deburr the edges. With a price-tag of 1900 you would expect something of a bit higher quality.

Summary.

With the introduction of the CDJ-2000 nexus, the industry leader Pioneer, has managed to set the standard of professional mediaplayers just that little bit higher. The player supports lots of various forms of media & offers almost endless creative options, as well as a certain amount of comfort options, making mixing easier. It's a shame that many of the features are exclusive to SD/USB device use, that have to be especially prepared in advance. DJ's, that use it without preparing songs in Rekordbox or with audio CD's, have to make do with a slimmed down version of features. Users, that already own the CDJ-2000, who are considering upgrading, should take in to consideration that many of the new functions will be made available with the next firmware update. If you're willing to invest time in the preparation and/or want to use the CDJ-2000 nexus within a Pro-DJ-Link network alongside other devices, will be the proud owner of well-functioning, professional DJ System.
