Up and Coming: Ivory

Deephouse mit technoidem Einschlag, mal Peaktime Filler, mal atmosphärische Slowburner: Der gebürtige Mailänder Ivory nimmt gerade richtig Fahrt auf und beweist bei seinen Tracks stets ein gutes Ohr für Melodien. Ob düster, melancholisch oder energetisch, mit seinem hohen, qualitativen Output bahnte sich Ivory zuletzt seinen Weg in die Sets von Größen wie Tale Of Us oder Mind Against und reist mittlerweile mit seinen eigenen Sets rund um den Globus. Wir sprachen mit Ivory in unserem neuen Up And Coming über Inspiration, erste Erfahrungen mit elektronischer Musik und die Liebe.

In den letzten Jahren haben viele italienische Produzenten, angeführt von Künstlern wie Tale Of Us, einen ganz eigenen Stil entwickelt. Was waren deine ersten Berührungspunkte mit House-/Techno-Musik und wie würdest du deinen eigenen Stil beschreiben?

Ich war schon immer fasziniert von elektronischer Musik. Mein erster Kontakt mit Underground-House-/Techno-Musik ist Jahre her und war bei einem DJ-Set von Tigerskin in einem verlassenen Lagerhaus in Mailand. Ich war überwältigt von der Kombination aus Atmosphäre und dem tiefgehenden Eindruck, den der Sound hinterlässt. Ich konnte mit meinem ganzen Körper und meinem Verstand dort eintauchen. Ich weiß nicht, ob ich meinen eigenen Sound beschreiben könnte. Meiner Meinung nach muss ein Künstler ständig an seinem Stil arbeiten, neue Wege finden und sich von vielen verschiedenen Quellen inspirieren lassen. Das versuche ich, weil ich nicht will, dass meine Musik statisch und eintönig wird.

Du warst letztes Jahr sehr aktiv und hast drei EPs und zahlreiche Remixe veröffentlicht. Wie hältst du deine Produktivität so konstant hoch?

Produktivität ist etwas, was sehr stark mit Inspiration verbunden ist und Inspiration ist für mich wie die Liebe. Wenn du krampfhaft danach suchst, funktioniert es meistens nicht. Wenn du sie aber einfach kommen lässt und sie dich durchströmt, dann bist du auf dem richtigen Weg. Ich erzwinge deshalb nichts, sondern hole mir meine Inspiration von vielen verschiedenen Quellen: Musik, Film, Kunst, Literatur, Reisen, Gefühle oder dem täglichen Leben. Es ist eben wie in der Liebe.

Erzähl uns doch etwas über deinen Produktionsstil! Gibt es spezielles Equipment oder Methoden die du häufig nutzt?

Wenn ich neue Musik mache, dann weil ich eine Idee habe, einen Gedankengang, den ich zu Musik machen möchte. Mir geht es da nicht um Equipment oder spezielle Methoden, ich mache einfach meine Instrumente an und folge meiner Idee. Von der rhythmischen Struktur bis zum melodischen Arrangement.

Du hast bereits in vielen verschiedenen Ländern rund um die Welt gespielt. Was war dein Lieblingsgig oder der beste Club, in dem du gespielt hast, und wo würdest du in der Zukunft gerne auftreten?

Ich bin für jedes Land dankbar, in dem ich spielen darf, und und auch für jeden Club, der mir und meiner Musik vertraut. Es wäre nicht richtig, hier nur ein paar Namen zu nennen. Tel Aviv ist eine heiße Adresse und immer bereit für Party, ich hatte aber auch großartige Erfahrungen in Tunesien oder zuletzt im Rat Cat Club in Kroatien. Ich finde aber in jedem Land oder Club Menschen, die Musik lieben und ich bin froh, ihnen meine Musik nahezubringen. Wo ich also in der Zukunft gerne spielen würde? Überall!

Welche neuen Projekte und Veröffentlichungen kann man in Zukunft von dir erwarten? Gibt es schon fertige EPs/LPs?

Ich habe zwei Releases fertig für den Sommer, eine EP für das neue Label Nebula Sounds mit einigen coolen Remixen von Mathias Schober oder Baime, und eine EP mit vier originalen Tracks, die auf Microcastles erscheint.

Zu guter Letzt, wie würdest du ein perfektes DJ-Set beschreiben?

Als eine Reise durch eine Landschaft, die von der größtmöglichen Biodiversität geprägt ist. Meiner Meinung nach braucht ein DJ-Set viele verschiedene Schichten und Facetten. Es gibt Momente, in denen man sehr hart spielt, dann wiederum sehr smooth. Es gibt Momente, in denen man deep und groovy spielt, und weitere Momente, in denen man sich eine Pause nimmt und einfach nur zuhört.

Deephouse with a touch of techno, from peaktime filler to atmospheric slowburner: Born in Milan, Ivory's career is starting to roll, due to his excellent ear for great melodies. Dark, melancholic, energetic: With his high quality output, Ivory started to find his way into the sets of artists like Tale Of Us or Mind Against and he's travelling all around the globe. In our new Up And Coming we talked to Ivory about inspiration, his first encounter with electronic music and, of course, love.

In the last years, a lot of Italian producers developed a unique style led by artists like Tale Of Us. What were your first points of contact with techno/house music and how would you describe your own style?

I’ve always been fascinated by electronic music. My first contact with underground techno/house music was years ago at a Tigerskin DJ-set in an abandoned warehouse in Milan. I was impressed by the combination of atmosphere and depth of the sound experience, a full dive for body and mind. I don’t know if I can describe my style. In my opinion an artist has to build his style everyday, find new solutions and be inspired by many different sources. I’m trying to do this, I don't want to be static in a certain musical idea.

You were quite busy the last years and this year you already released three EPs and several remixes. How do you keep up with your productivity over the years?

Productivity is something that is extremely related to inspiration and inspiration is like the game of love, like a woman. When you are searching for her, most of the time, she doesn't match your love. But if you let her come to you when she wants, when she feels free to flow through you, that’s the right way to do it. I don’t force my relation with inspiration, i feed her taking loads of inputs from everywhere, music, cinema, art, literature, traveling, emotions, everyday life. It’s just like love.

Tell us something about your production style and workflow. Do you have any special equipment, or methods you like to use?

When I’m approaching new music it’s because I have an idea, a thought that I want to shape into music. It’s not about equipment or a method, I just turn on my instruments and I start to follow the idea, from the groove structure to the melodic arrangments I let myself be suggested from that inspiration..

You already played in a lot of different countries all over the world. What was your favourite gig or venue and were would you like to play in the future?

I’m always thankful to every venue and country that hosts me and has trust in me and my music, it would be reductive mentioning only a few. Tel Aviv is always hot and ready to party, I had grateful experiences in Tunisia or in Croatia at Rat Cat Club recently, but I find people who really love music in every venue and country and I’m glad to offer my music to them. Where I would like to play in the future? I would like to play everywhere.

Do you have any upcoming releases planned and are there any new projects you want to approach?

I have two releases ready for this summer, an EP for the newborn label Nebula Sounds with some really cool remixes from Mathias Schober and Baime and a release with four original tracks out on Microcastle.

At last, how would you describe your perfect DJ-Set?

A journey through a landscape characterized by the most possible biodiversity. A DJ-set in my opinion needs to be layered and multifaceted, in a same set there’s a moment to play hard and mental, another one to play smooth, a moment to play deep and groovy and another one to take a breathe and listen, be amazed and start again.
